Empowered Alumni Spotlight

On December 5th, Awilda was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is the second child of four children born to William Wayne and Alice Irene Ogilvie. Her father was in the Military; therefore, she and her sisters were able to live in many different places around the United States and in Spain. This traveling has inspired Awilda to continue traveling as an adult.

Awilda went to Azusa Pacific University to pursue her BA degree in Psychology, desiring to be a Marriage and Family Counselor. However, in college to support herself, she became a teacher’s aide at a private school. This is where she saw that she could help and influence children even more in the education arena. She received her Multiple Subject Credential to teach Elementary School and later her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.

After graduating from Azusa Pacific University, she married her soulmate, Dansby Sturdivant Jr. and through this union they have two wonderful children. Dansby and Awilda live in Victorville, California where they both impact the lives of children. After 30 years of teaching, in 2019 she received the “Teacher of the Year Award” from Victor Elementary School District. Having found her niche in life she now gets to share and coach teachers as a Curriculum Coordinator. Awilda also works with students in the church. She is the coordinator of the Youth Ministry and Director of the A+ Ministry, which promotes career and college readiness. God has blessed her tremendously to live a servant’s life.
